INTRODUCTION:
The YU Televentures are the brand producing the Yu series of smartphones. This is an Indian Telecommunications venture headquartered at Gurgaon, Haryana. It is a trio joint venture partnering with Cyanogen Ltd and Micromax Informatics Ltd. The various Yu products produced till date are the YUreka, YUphoria, YUfit, YUpix, Juice and finally our product of interest YUtopia. The YU Yutopia is also known as the YU 5050.This smartphone was the first premium quality product claimed to have exceptional specifications in comparison to its fellow competitors. The hype created for this phone was mainly from the media gimmicks that YU created. This was through an online campaign it publicised stating the inferior specifications of products from OnePlus, Samsung and Apple. Also, another viral news about the leaked specifications of this smartphone made rounds in the social media. At the time of launch, it was exclusively available for sale only on Amazon. So, being a phone which has made so much news even before its release it sure needs a detailed review. So, let us now discuss Micromax YU Yutopia review.
LAUNCH PRICE & DATE:
The Micromax YU Yutopia was announced officially on 18th December 2015, followed by it release on the 26th of December, 2015 after much speculation. At the date of release, it was priced at INR 24,999/-.
DESIGN & DIMENSIONS:
YU’s previous products are known to sport a plastic exterior. But with this smartphone YU has decided to go all metallic with the aircraft quality Aluminium finish. So this gives the smartphone a really light and sleek look. Just like the Yuphoria smartphone, this comes with a ring from the camera at the rear centre, but with a much bigger size. The phone has a length of 146.60 mm. The breadth and thickness of the phone are 72.66 x 7.20 mm respectively. The phone weighs 159g and comes in just one colour, Greyish silver.
DISPLAY:
This smartphone comes with a 5.2 inch LCD touch screen. It is designed with an IPS Capacitive touch having 16 M colour vibrancy. It comes with a display having approximately 69.9 % screen to body ratio. The screen resolution is around 1440 x 2560 pixels. The screen is protected by the Corning Concore Glass. And it has a pixel density of 565 ppi.
OS & PROCESSOR:
It functions on the Android OS v 5.5.1 (Lollipop). It is also supported by the Cyanogen OS 12.1 which is, one unique additional feature giving a major advantage to this smartphone. The chipset used here is the powerful 64- bit Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810. The processing is taken care by a pair of processors against the traditional single processors used in all other smartphones. They are the Quad – Core Cortex A57 and the Quad – Core Cortex A53 which performs at a speed of 2.0 GHz and 1.5 GHz respectively. The GPU interface used is Adreno 430.
STORAGE SPECS:
This smartphone comes with an internal memory capacity of 32GB. It also has compatibility with micro SD or TransFlash cards to expand its storage beyond 32 GB. It can expand to a maximum of 128 GB. Also, it has a DDR4 RAM memory of a really good 4GB. This RAM specification ensures playing highly taxing games will not be a problem.
BATTERY LIFE:
It has a non-removable Li-Po battery which a capacity of 3000 mAh. It also has a quick charging option due to the Quick Charge 2.0 feature of the Qualcomm chipset that is used here. It promises a standby time of up to 300h and a talk time of around 8h. The battery capacity is on a slightly disappointing end for a smartphone with otherwise exceptional features.
MULTIMEDIA:
Camera: This phone has a dual camera, one in the front and one at the back. The back camera has 21 MP pixel clarity while the front camera has a good 8 MP clarity. The rear camera has a lens aperture of f/2.2 and a wide angle range of 27mm. The additional features that support this camera are dual LED tonnes flash, autofocus and phase-detection. Other enhancement features are the presence of a huge(1/2.4”) sensor, 1.12-micrometer pixel size, face detection and HDR among many others. The secondary camera too has some supportive features like a lens aperture of f/2.2 and a sensor of 1/3.2 inches. It also shoots pictures with a pixel size of 1.4 micrometres.
Audio: It supports most of the audio formats like MP3, WAV and MIDI. Also, it comes with inbuilt good quality stereo speakers. It has a good FM compatibility too.
Video: It is known to record high definition videos with almost zero lag. With the front camera, it can record videos with 720p resolution at the rate of 120fps. While with the back camera it can capture even better videos with 2160p at the rate of 30fps. It supports almost all basic video formats.
CONNECTIVITY:
The Micromax YU Yuptopia comes with two sims. One sim is of the micro type and the other one the nano type. Both are compatible with GSM connectivity. Both the sims work on both 3G and 4G/LTE as well as a 4G band(band 40) in India too. It also has other wireless connectivity features like the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v4.10. But it does not support NFC.

Features: The advantageous features are its amazing OS, clear display and the Quick charge feature. On the negative end though is its below par battery capacity, heat generation and average camera.
