Save Money on your Electricity Bill

We all are looking for ways to save our money and spend it on something we actually enjoy, like vacation or our hobbies.

Just by making a few changes at our home we can end up saving a lot of money on our electricity bill.

Read further on how we can do that…

Adjusting the thermostat

Setting back the thermostat by 7-10 F  for 8 hours a day can help you save up to 10% on your monthly electricity bills!

The science is pretty simple – when you switch on your thermostat it uses energy to make sure the temperature you set it to is comparable to the temperature outside.

It’s because of this reason that scientists also say you should not turn off your thermostat when you are not home and set it closer to the outside temperature.

The department of energy recommends setting the thermostat to around 68 F during the winter and setting it to 78 F in the winters while you are at home.

You can go to the department of energy’s website  for more information. They even have a short video to help you save money!

Buying products with Energy Star rating

Energy Star is a program which is a joint effort of the  Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE).

Buying these products can help you save a lot of money. You can visit the department of Energy’s website to find out more.

Buying LED bulbs

LED bulbs are 90% more efficient than conventional halogen and CFL bulbs.
The reason for this is because conventional bulbs use 90% of the energy to produce heat and  bulbs which release 10% if their energy as actual light.

Imagine spending 100 $ a day to light up your house with conventional bulbs, you only get 10$ worth of light.

However, LED bulbs are much more efficient and release 90% of their energy to produce light.

Some green energy companies even hand them out to their customers for free!

Change your utility company

In some states you have the choice of choosing to buy your electricity from several energy companies.

These states are called deregulated states. You can choose the one which offers the best value for money or opt for a green energy company

Switch off appliances which you are not using

This one is a no brainer. Appliances which are not being used but are left on still consume energy. Why keep them switched on and waste money?

You can save upto 78$  a year just by doing exactly this!

Clean your Air Conditioner

Your air conditioner also acts as an air filter for your house. It can be full of lint and dust which reduces its efficiency dramatically.

What should you do in this situation? You should make sure to clean it regularly to ensure it remains efficient. Doing so can help you save up to 82$ a year!

Check your insulation

Your thermostat tries to heat up home while the insulation tries to keep that heat trapped in the house.

If you have poor insulation you will end up losing a lot of that heat  and end up wasting a lot of money.

The department of energy recommends that we check the insulation in our house at least once a year.

Doing so can help you save 7-10% on your yearly electricity bills.

These are just a few tips on how to save energy and save money at the same time.
