So you’ve decided to buy a tablet, are you a bit confused by the variety of models? Then you’ve come to the right page, in this post we will try to understand the basic and most important parameters of modern tablets, we will help you decide which one is right for you, a difficult choice. Do you want your new tablet PC to replace your bulky, heavy and not too fast laptop? Tablets are handier than laptops as they can be placed in a small bag or even in your pocket, their larger screens and bigger batteries makes them more functional than Smartphones.
It is worth noting that if you are a programmer, a designer, an architect or a lover of serious games, the tablet is not for you. After all, the basic functions of the tablet are for entertainment: watching movies online, social networking, casual games, videos, e-books or reading blogs. It’s one thing to write a message on your favourite blog or social network, tablets are not for writing long and detailed essays or designing complicated buildings, not yet anyway.
Unfortunately, modern mobile operating systems are poorly adapted to complicated work and tablets are not the best for typing on. See the Windows bit further down if you want a tablet to work on, Windows 10 is Microsoft’s latest operating system and many manufacturers such as Toshiba manufacture Windows 10 tablets.
The Main Difference With a Tablet – The Operating System
The main difference between Tablet PCs and Laptops or Computers lies in their operating system. After all, it is the operating system that allows you to interact with the gadget. The operating system is certainly worth consideration when choosing a tablet.
The first and once most common operating system for tablets is IOS, developed and supported by popular manufacturer, Apple. For years Apple have been the market leader in the Smartphone and Tablet market place, they were the first manufacturer to release a mobile operating system but their market share has dropped considerably since Google purchased Android.
Android Operating System
The Android operating system powers more than a billion mobile devices and is currently the market leading operating system for Smartphones and tablet computers. The Android operating system is open source and built on the Linux kernel, it’s latest incarnation is called Lollipop 5.0. Many companies such as Samsung use Android as the OS for their tablets and Smartphones.
Windows
Both Android and IOS were primarily developed for use as Smartphone operating systems, although good they can be a bit limited in their functionality. Windows is a bit different though, Windows as you no doubt know was created for desktops and Microsoft’s’ latest release is Windows 10. With their desktop operating system Windows tablets have more functionality than Android or IOS ones but they are still small and their processors are not going to be able to cope with the same kind of work that a good laptop or desktop can manage.
See the PC mag guide to Windows tablets here. A powerful Windows tablet is going to cost as much as a laptop, most come with detachable keyboards and large hard drives so practically are laptops anyway.
Manufacturer
Manufacturer is important when choosing a tablet, Chinese Android tablets can be bought very cheaply on eBay but they usually have rubbish processors, rubbish batteries and they crash a lot. Instead of getting into processors, storage capacity, etc. I would recommend you look to buy a tablet made by an established manufacturer such as Samsung, HTC or of course, Apple. If you know what you are looking at and are tech savvy some bargain Android tablets can be found.
