Goosebumps a Hair-raising Event

Mostly known as an indicator of being afraid or cold, goosebumps actually served a purpose for our more hairy ancestors. As our body responds to fear, the adrenal glands kick in, helping us with much needed strength or speed. Similar to the way our eyes dialate, our hair follicles raise up causing little bumps at the follicle site. In this fascinating video by NPR’s Skunk Bear, we learn that there is more to goosebumps than just a little hair-raising.
