Something we don’t like to think about is reaching that time of life when we might require home care, or it may be ageing parents that have you researching just what is publicly funded or is covered through private insurance. Listed here are which services are provided by public subsidy by the Provincial government and those that are covered for those who are covered by private insurance.
In BC, care and support are available from both publicly subsidized and private pay providers for those having difficulty coping with activities of daily living because of health related or a life threatening illness. Publicly subsidized home care is provided for residents of BC and includes providing assistance with activities of daily living such as mobilization, nutrition, lifts and transfers, bathing, grooming and toileting.
Home Support Services
Home care workers provide in home care that allows residents to remain in their homes while receiving the assistance the may need. These support services may also include safety maintenance activities as a supplement to personal assistance when appropriate and might include cleanup, laundry of soiled bedding or clothing and meal preparation. In addition community health care workers perform some specific nursing and rehabilitation tasks that have been delegated by healthcare professionals.
Community Nursing
A qualified, licensed nursing professional is another service that is provided to clients that require regular, acute, chronic, palliative or rehabilitative support services. Some of these services include education, wound care, medication management, chronic disease management, post surgical care as well as palliative care. This much needed support is meant to be for the short term only as the community nurse assist their clients and their families through education to feel confident in the task of taking over the client’s at home care.
Private Insurance
Health care policies are available that provide greater coverage than what is provided through the publicly subsidized services provided to all residents. You may want to explore purchasing this type of insurance if it’s not provided through your employer or as a kind of insurance against future health needs. This extra protection will provide a broader scope of home care and nursing support provided through public subsidy. Whichever support services you it’s comforting to know that you and/or your loved ones will be taken care of.
A time may come when a client is no longer able to remain in their own home, when it’s time for that next phase, contact Highgate Lodge if you are looking for a Victoria BC retirement home.
