Autoliv the automotive superpower has introduced the infrared sensors that are highly effective to highlight objects in the road at night, even when there’s impenetrable darkness. These sensors can spot anything that comes in the way far before headlights illuminate them. Quite similar to the military systems, Autoliv allows troops to see clearly amidst the dark on a battlefield. The infrared camera also generates thermal images of what’s ahead, be it animals or the pedestrians or cyclists.
As of now, the night vision of Autoliv is available now on a few high-end models including Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Cadillac. As per the current market price, the cost of implementing it as a standalone option will be costing around $2,000. In addition, it will be equipped with a series of other tech features, however, that’s only coming up as an optional package.
According to the experts, the infrared sensors are better kept attached in the windshield, where the driver’s eyes can stay naturally focused, with the help of a heads-up display. However, in most cars the display usually appears on a dashboard screen in the center stack. It is usually placed in between the driver and passenger seats, where the GPS system normally being implemented.
In spite of its exceptional qualities, experts have a different view about this technology> They opined that automotive night vision will soon be cheaper as more people try it out in next few years. “You’ll see it arriving on some mid-level models by 2017,” says Stuart Klapper, a managing director at Autoliv. He has also pointed out the host of other common technology including, power windows, anti-lock brakes and airbags, which also had made their way in the past same way. After starting on the most expensive models, they eventually came down to the reach of the wider market.
